FAQ
Everything you need to know about the Pass, accommodation, working remotely, and the Academy.
The Pass
What is the Swallow Base Pass?
The Pass is your access key to coworking, onsen, local insights, and community events at a Swallow Base location. It's separate from accommodation — think of it as a membership for the experience, not the room.
Does the Pass include accommodation?
No. Accommodation at the partner ryokan is booked and paid separately. The Pass covers workspace, onsen access, community events, and local insights.
Can I extend or combine Passes?
Yes. Passes can be purchased consecutively. Start with 7 days, extend to 14 or 30. There's no limit on consecutive passes.
When do Passes go on sale?
Reservations open in late June 2026. Follow us on Instagram for the exact date and early-bird offers.
Is the Pass tied to one location?
Each Pass is valid at the location where you book it. Multi-location passes are being considered for the future.
Accommodation
What are the rooms like?
Rooms are traditional ryokan style — tatami floors, futon bedding, shoji screens. Some rooms have river or garden views. Modern amenities (wifi, power outlets, A/C) are included.
How do I book a room?
Accommodation is booked directly with the partner ryokan. We'll provide booking links and guidance once the Pass is available.
How much does accommodation cost?
Room rates vary by ryokan and season. Expect ¥5,000–15,000 per night depending on room type and meal plan. Long-stay discounts are available.
Can I cook my own meals?
Yes. Each location has a shared kitchen with basic cooking equipment. There are also supermarkets and convenience stores nearby.
Living & Working
How fast is the wifi?
Partner ryokans provide fiber internet (200+ Mbps). The coworking spaces have dedicated ethernet ports for video calls. Mobile coverage (4G/5G) is reliable at all locations.
Are there dedicated workspaces?
Yes. Each location has a coworking area with desks, power outlets, and quiet zones. External monitors are available for lending at check-in.
What about laundry?
Washer and dryer facilities are available at all locations. Some ryokans include laundry service.
Is the onsen really unlimited?
Yes. Full access to the ryokan's onsen facilities is included with every Pass. Most locations have indoor and outdoor baths, open early morning to late evening.
Getting There
How do I get to Ureshino?
From Fukuoka: JR Sasebo line to Takeo-Onsen (70 min), then bus to Ureshino (30 min). Or highway bus direct from Hakata Bus Terminal (90 min, ~¥1,500).
How do I get to Izu?
From Tokyo: JR Odoriko limited express to Shimoda (2.5 hrs) or Izu-Atagawa (2 hrs). By car: 2-3 hours via Tomei Expressway.
Do I need a car?
Not required. Both locations are walkable towns with local bus service. A rental car is useful for exploring further but not essential for daily life.
What about visa requirements?
Most visitors can stay in Japan up to 90 days visa-free. For longer stays, you may need a specific visa. Check with your local Japanese embassy for current requirements.
The Academy
What is the Academy?
The Academy offers cultural learning programs led by local practitioners — tea culture, Zen meditation, pottery, cooking, and onsen traditions. Sessions go deeper than a typical tourist experience.
Are Academy sessions included in the Pass?
No. Academy sessions are booked and paid separately. 30-day Pass holders receive a 20% discount on Academy experiences.
Do I need experience to join?
No prior experience needed. Programs are designed for beginners who want to learn thoughtfully, not quickly.
What language are sessions in?
Sessions are conducted in Japanese with English interpretation available. Some masters speak basic English. Language barriers are part of the experience — and often lead to the most memorable moments.
